PICK YOUR BED

SIZE MATTER. With a larger bed you are less likely to disturb your partner. You should be able to lie side by side, with your arms behind your head and your elbows out, without touching. Your bed should also be 4-6in (10-15cm) longer than the tallest partner.

Did you know that two people sharing a standard double size bed have only as much personal sleeping space as a baby in a cot?

PRICE. The best bed for you isn't necessarily the most expensive bed, though it's worth spending as much as you can to afford on a good mattress.

LONGEVILITY. The average lifespan of a bed| mattress, is about 8 to 10 years. After regular use a bed may have deteriorated by as much as 75% from its original condition.

Did you know that we sweat as much as half to a full pint of fluid a night, and house dust mites accumulate in beds too.

ACCESS ALL AREAS. If you are worried about getting the bed upstairs, remember most divans have split bases; while many bedsteads are actually delivered in pieces for assembly in situ.

IT TAKES TWO. Both the bed base and the mattress are designed to work together and it can be a false economy to change only the mattress and keep the old base, especially if you are buying a divan set.

The old base could reduce the useful life of the new mattress as well as the support and comfort it can offer.

DIMENSIONS. Bed sizes are not standardised and even if they have the same name (eg King Size) they may not be the same size – especially if the mattress and base are not from the same manufacturer.

Small double  W120 x L190

BED BASE STYLES

Divans. There are three main types of divan

Divans are the most popular style of base in the UK. They are essentially an upholstered box, fitted with castors for mobility or on legs to create space beneath. We offer many beautifully tailored and upholstered bases with matching headboards in a range of colours and fabrics.

Sprung edge – these divans are the most luxurious option. It features a complete open coil or pocket spring unit mounted on the frame which acts like a giant shock absorber, increasing the mattress’s durability and the quality of your sleep.

Slatted bases - are mostly used with bedsteads. Flexible slats are made from laminated soft woods mounted in a frame creating a modest level of springiness from their bowed shape. The space between slats on most, cheaper, rigid bases is usually wider than on flexible slatted models. Most manufacturers make their own recommendations for slat spacing to suit their own mattresses so check these before buying as they do vary.

Bedsteads come in a vast array of styles and are available in wood, metal, plastics, upholstered or any combination of these. Your choice will largely be an aesthetic one but bear in mind mattress support. Take care to ensure your mattress and bedstead are the same size!

Headboards like most things in the bedroom, your headboard acts as a style statement and will be a dominant feature, so it’s worth doing a bit of research before you buy one. You should think what fabric you like, whether you want a simple rectangular design or a more lavish padded design and how the colour choice or pattern compliment the design of the room.

Did you know that upholstered headboards give you more comfort where wooden headboards can give you sturdiness.

Solid or platform top divan - have a rigid, non-sprung top panel, often made from hardboard. Beds with these bases are generally firmer, as well as cheaper than beds with sprung bases.

Firm edge divan - generally feature a smaller number of larger, heavy duty springs within a rigid, wooden sided frame. A divan is useful if need storage space as most are available with drawers or lift-up storage, known as ottomans. Storage need not affect the comfort or quality of the bed – but it does cost a little more.

Bunk beds and cabin beds are a popular option for parents and children. They are fun as well as practical and space-saving.

Guest/ Folding Beds provide flexible solutions for those unexpected visitors. As well as a fold up bed can be a great solution in small living spaces.
